QSO Director at DXFest 2026: Three Stations, One Synchronised Log

We’re pleased to announce the addition of native Elecraft K4 support to QSO Director, bringing comprehensive radio control, direct LAN connectivity and native spectrum scope support to Elecraft’s flagship K4 transceiver family.
The new integration has been developed as a native QSO Director radio interface rather than relying on Hamlib, an external CAT-control application or another compatibility layer. This allows QSO Director to communicate directly with the K4 and take advantage of capabilities beyond conventional frequency and mode control.
Direct LAN Connection to the Elecraft K4
One of the key features of the new integration is native LAN connectivity.
QSO Director can connect directly to an Elecraft K4 over the local network, allowing operators to control and monitor the radio without requiring a traditional USB or serial CAT connection between the computer and transceiver.
For stations where the K4 is already connected to the station network, this can significantly simplify connectivity. It is particularly useful for more complex installations and network-based operating environments, where the radio may not necessarily be located next to the computer running QSO Director.
Operators can configure the K4’s network connection within QSO Director and communicate with the transceiver directly across their LAN.
Native K4 Spectrum Scope Support
The integration goes considerably further than basic radio control.
QSO Director can receive spectrum scope data directly from the Elecraft K4, allowing the radio’s spectrum information to be displayed using QSO Director’s own spectrum and panadapter capabilities.
This means K4 operators can see activity across the band visually within QSO Director rather than relying solely on frequency and mode information obtained through conventional CAT commands.
Spectrum integration is an important part of QSO Director’s approach to modern transceiver support. Where a radio provides access to spectrum data, our goal is to make that information available directly to the wider application rather than treating the radio simply as a source of frequency and mode information.
For the K4, this means radio control, radio state and spectrum scope data can all form part of the same native integration.
More Than Traditional CAT Control
Traditional logging software integrations often concentrate on a relatively small set of CAT commands: reading the frequency, changing mode, selecting a VFO and perhaps monitoring a handful of additional radio states.
QSO Director’s native hardware architecture is designed to go further.
The K4 integration allows information from the radio to become part of the wider QSO Director operating environment. This can be used alongside logging, band activity, DX information and other connected station hardware to provide a more integrated view of what is happening across the station.
The addition of spectrum scope support is a particularly good example of this approach. Rather than requiring a separate application purely to visualise spectrum activity, the K4 can provide spectrum information directly to QSO Director.
Built for Modern Elecraft Stations
The Elecraft K4 is particularly well suited to QSO Director’s approach to station integration.
Modern amateur-radio stations increasingly consist of multiple interconnected devices rather than simply a radio and logging computer. QSO Director is being developed to provide a common environment for station equipment.
Native K4 support therefore isn’t just about being able to log the frequency from the radio.
With direct LAN communication and spectrum scope support, QSO Director can make much greater use of the capabilities available from a modern network-connected transceiver such as the K4.
This also reduces the need to route every station device through traditional serial interfaces or additional intermediary software.
Serial Connections Remain Supported
LAN connectivity isn’t the only option.
Operators who prefer a conventional connection can still configure their Elecraft K4 using an appropriate local radio-control connection. This allows the integration to accommodate both traditional desktop installations and stations designed around network-connected equipment.
Our aim is to let operators choose the connection method that best suits their station rather than forcing a particular configuration.
Continuing to Expand Native Radio Support
Native Elecraft K4 support forms part of QSO Director’s continuing work to provide comprehensive support for amateur-radio transceivers and station hardware from leading manufacturers.
Where suitable manufacturer protocols are available, our preference is to implement hardware support directly within QSO Director. Doing so gives us greater control over the integration and, importantly, allows us to support advanced capabilities that aren’t necessarily exposed through a generic radio-control interface.
The K4 is a great example of what this approach can provide.
With native radio control, direct LAN connectivity and integrated spectrum scope support, Elecraft K4 owners can now connect their transceiver directly to QSO Director and make it a fully integrated part of their station.
It’s another step towards our goal of making QSO Director not simply a logging application, but a comprehensive operating environment for the modern amateur-radio station.
